What Curved Glass Actually Is
Curved glass, also called bent glass, is flat glass reshaped into a curve — cylindrical, spherical, or a more complex compound shape — while retaining the transparency and finish of standard flat glass. It’s not a different material, just a different manufacturing step applied to the same glass used everywhere else in a project, which is what allows a curved section to sit seamlessly alongside flat glazing in the same façade or staircase.
How Curved Glass Is Made
Flat glass is placed onto a mould shaped to the exact radius required, then loaded into a kiln and heated until it softens — typically in the range of 600–700°C, the point at which glass becomes pliable without melting. As it heats, gravity and the mould gradually shape the glass into the curved form. It’s then cooled in a controlled process to lock in the shape without introducing stress cracks or distortion.
This is fundamentally the same heat process used for tempering, which is why curved glass is often toughened as part of the same production step — heated, shaped, and rapidly cooled together — rather than as two separate stages.
Single vs. Double Curvature
Single curvature bends glass in one direction only, like a section of a cylinder — this is the more common and more cost-effective form, suitable for the majority of curved façade sections, staircase enclosures, and feature walls.
Double curvature (also called compound curvature) bends glass in two directions simultaneously, similar to a section of a sphere. This is significantly more complex to mould and control during heating, and is generally reserved for architecturally ambitious features — domes, sculptural facade elements, or a genuine design centrepiece — rather than routine applications.
Where Curved Glass Is Used
Building facades. Curved corner sections or fully rounded façade elements give a building a distinct silhouette that flat glazing alone can’t achieve.
Staircases. A curved glass balustrade following a spiral or sweeping staircase creates continuous, unbroken sightlines that a series of flat panels can’t replicate.
Feature walls and lobbies. Hospitality and commercial lobbies use curved glass as a design statement — a rounded reception desk surround or an entrance feature.

Curved Glass UAE Safety: Toughened and Laminated
One detail worth knowing: unlike flat glass, there’s currently no dedicated European standard specifically governing curved glass products — the industry instead applies the same toughened (EN 12150) and heat-strengthened (EN 1863) standards used for flat glass, adapted to the curved form. In practice, this means the safety performance of curved glass depends heavily on the fabricator’s process control and experience, more so than with flat glass where standards are more tightly defined.

What to Provide When Ordering
Curved glass can’t be specified with a simple width and height the way flat glass can. Fabricators typically need:
Radius. The curvature measurement, usually provided directly if known, or calculated from other dimensions.
Girth. The measurement along the curved surface itself — effectively the “width” of the curve, measured with a flexible tape along the actual curved path rather than in a straight line.
Chord and depth (if radius is unknown). Where the radius isn’t already known, providing the chord (a straight-line measurement across the curve) and the depth (how far the curve deviates from that straight line) allows the fabricator to calculate the radius.
Height. The straight vertical dimension, measured the same way as for flat glass.
